Chapter 21

Johnny

I was awoken in the best possible way. God knows what hour in the morning it was when Chad grabbed my shoulder, gave it a squeeze, shook it, and an annoyingly chirpy voice said, “Rise and shine, Champ.” The shaking continued. “Come on buddy, get up.”

Oh wait, scratch that, it was actually the worst way to wake up in the world.

I blinked my eyes open lazily several times. I looked up to see the besuited little man who was currently acting as my band manager. To make matters worse, when I reached to the side to grab Lucy’s tits or a piece of ass to cheer me up there was no one there. She’d gone. Again.

It was only just beginning but already today was shaping up to be a terrible day. Light was streaming through the closed curtains; they were so thin and threadbare they didn’t act as much of a barrier to the morning rays streaming in. How long had I slept, I wondered. It couldn’t have been more than a couple of hours, and in fact it felt like I’d only just closed my eyes. I’m never drinking again. I’m never going to a stripclub again. I’m never—

“Come on, I’ve got half a dozen bassists waiting for you to audition them.”

My hands clutched the side of my head. That was right. My goddamned bassist had gone missing. And now we had to find a temporary replacement until Chad’s top investigation team had managed to track him down.

“What do you mean they’re waiting? They’re at the studio already?”

“Studio? What studio?”

“Well, where are we doing the auditions? Did you have somewhere else in mind?”

Chad was pacing up and down the room. “We’re doing the auditions downstairs, in Conference Room C.”

How the hell was he so cheery? He can’t have slept much more than I did but he was all bright-eyed and bushy tailed. Annoying twat.

“So we’re auditioning them in a meeting room are we? That’s great, Chad. Really great.”

“I figured all you need to do is see whether they can play or not. Surely the acoustics or whatever don’t matter, do they?”

“For a man involved in the music industry, you seem to know remarkably little about it.”

“Baby, you do the music stuff, I do the business stuff. I’m going to make you, me, and the rest of the band both rich, and famous.”

I closed my eyes to get a couple more minutes rest. I wasn’t sure I had the energy to do with much attention.

“By the way, what’d you do with the stripper?”

I blinked my eyes open again. “She’s not a stripper.”

“Yeah, and I’m not the best damn manager in the industry.”

I felt a burst of annoyance. This guy. At this time of the morning. Urgh.

“I don’t know, Chad.”

“Should have slipped her another fifty-spot to stay the night.”

Using my hands I pushed myself to a sitting position, leaning back against the headboard. I grabbed the glass of water that was next to the bed — when had I put that there, I wondered.
